What We Test

Comprehensive Evaluation Parameters.

Tests are grouped by type. Under each test you can see which products it is run on, so you can check it fits your sample before sending it in.

Mechanical Testing

Checks the strength and bonding of the product through bending, tensile, glue bond, internal bond and screw holding tests, along with visual classification and finish.

Applies to: Plywood, Block board, Particle board, MDF, Flush doors, Solid timber

Visual Classification / Appearance

Examines the product's appearance and classifies it against the visual grading requirements.

Applies to: Plywood, Block board, Particle board, MDF, Flush doors, Solid timber

Workmanship & Finish

Checks the quality of workmanship and surface finish.

Applies to: Plywood, Block board, Particle board, MDF, Flush doors, Solid timber

Surface Defects / Permissible Defects

Identifies surface defects and checks they are within the permissible limits.

Applies to: Plywood, Block board, Particle board, MDF, Flush doors, Solid timber

Static Bending Strength – MOE & MOR

Bends the specimen under load to find its stiffness (MOE) and the stress at which it breaks (MOR).

Applies to: Plywood, Block board, Particle board, MDF, Solid timber

Wet Bending Strength

Repeats the bending test on specimens soaked in water to see how much strength is lost when wet.

Tensile Strength

Pulls the specimen along its length until it fails to find its tensile strength.

Applies to: Plywood, Solid timber

Tensile Strength Perpendicular to Surface

Pulls the specimen at right angles to its face to check how well the layers or particles hold together.

Applies to: Particle board, MDF

Glue Shear Strength / Glue Adhesion

Measures the shear force the glue line holds before it fails.

Applies to: Plywood, Block board

Adhesion of Plies

Measures how well the plies of the board are bonded to each other.

Applies to: Plywood

Internal Bond Strength

Measures the strength of the bond between the particles or fibres inside the board.

Applies to: Particle board, MDF

Screw Withdrawal Resistance

Measures the force required to pull a screw out of the material.

Applies to: Particle board, MDF, Plywood, Block board

Dimensional Testing

Measures length, width, thickness and squareness against the specified dimensions and tolerances.

Applies to: Plywood, Block board, Particle board, MDF, Flush doors, Solid timber

Length / Height / Width

Measures the overall dimensions and compares them with the specified size.

Applies to: Plywood, Block board, Particle board, MDF, Flush doors, Solid timber

Thickness

Measures thickness and compares it with the specified value.

Applies to: Plywood, Block board, Particle board, MDF, Flush doors, Solid timber

Straightness & Squareness

Checks that edges are straight and corners are square.

Applies to: Plywood, Block board, Particle board, MDF, Flush doors, Solid timber

Physical Testing

Measures density, moisture content, water absorption and swelling to check how the product behaves in service.

Applies to: Plywood, Block board, Particle board, MDF, Solid timber

Density

Measures mass per unit volume of the material.

Applies to: Plywood, Block board, Particle board, MDF, Solid timber

Moisture Content

Finds the percentage of water in the material by weighing before and after oven drying.

Applies to: Plywood, Block board, Particle board, MDF, Solid timber

Water Absorption

Measures how much water the material takes up after soaking for a set time.

Applies to: Particle board, MDF, Plywood, Block board

Thickness Swelling in Water

Measures the increase in thickness after soaking in water.

Applies to: Particle board, MDF

Swelling Due to Surface Absorption

Measures the increase in thickness when water is held against the surface.

Durability Testing

Checks resistance to moisture and to attack by micro-organisms.

Applies to: Solid timber, Treated timber

Moisture Resistance

Checks how the material holds up after exposure to moisture.

Resistance to Micro-organism / Mycological Test

Checks whether fungi and other micro-organisms grow on the material.

Applies to: Solid timber, Treated timber

Surface Performance

Checks how the surface stands up to abrasion, steam, cracking and cigarette burns.

Abrasion Resistance

Rubs the surface with an abrasive to see how well the finish resists wear.

Resistance to Steam

Exposes the surface to steam to check for damage or change in appearance.

Crack Resistance

Checks the surface for cracking after conditioning.

Resistance to Cigarette Burn

Checks the surface for marks after contact with a burning cigarette.

Chemical Testing

Measures formaldehyde content, pH value and preservative retention.

Applies to: Plywood, Particle board, MDF, Treated timber, Treated plywood

Formaldehyde Content

Measures the amount of formaldehyde in the board.

Applies to: Plywood, Particle board, MDF

pH Value

Measures the acidity or alkalinity of the material.

Retention of Preservative

Measures how much preservative chemical the treated wood has retained.

Applies to: Treated timber, Treated plywood

Performance Testing

Checks how the product performs after exposure to water.

Resistance to Water

Checks the product after exposure to water.

Door Testing

Checks flush doors for flatness, planeness, strength under load, and resistance to slamming and impact.

Applies to: Flush doors

General Flatness Test

Checks that the door is flat across its whole face.

Applies to: Flush doors

Local Planeness Test

Checks the door surface for local dips or bumps using a straight edge and feeler gauge.

Applies to: Flush doors

Slamming Test

Slams the door repeatedly to check it withstands the shock without damage.

Applies to: Flush doors

Impact Indentation Test

Drops a weight on the door surface to check for indentation or damage.

Applies to: Flush doors

Flexure Test

Loads the door in bending to check how much it deflects.

Applies to: Flush doors

Edge Loading Test

Applies load along the edge of the door to check its strength.

Applies to: Flush doors

Screw Withdrawal Resistance

Measures the force needed to pull a screw out of the door.

Applies to: Flush doors

Inspection

Checks that the product carries the required markings.

Applies to: Plywood, Block board, Particle board, MDF, Flush doors, Solid timber

Marking

Checks that the product is marked as required.

Applies to: Plywood, Block board, Particle board, MDF, Flush doors, Solid timber
